Training in POR

Understanding the foundations of patient-oriented research (POR), building key skills and accessing tailored resources: you will find here the essential elements to support your learning. Whether you are getting familiar with the basics, deepening your knowledge or exploring content at your own pace, different tools and learning pathways are available to support your development.

LEARNING PLATFORM

A centralized, flexible and accessible space

Our bilingual learning platform brings together, in one place, a wide range of resources available at all times: learning pathways, targeted trainings, thematic series, recorded webinars and podcasts.

This diversity of content is made possible thanks to the contribution of different SPOR entities across Canada, which also share their own training resources.

Whether you are looking for an overview of POR or to explore a specific topic in more depth, you can browse the content at your own pace, according to your needs.

BUILDING SHARED COMPETENCIES FOR EFFECTIVE POR

In collaboration with SPOR entities across Canada, we are currently developing a core competency framework for patient-oriented research. This framework defines the essential competencies required for anyone engaged in POR, whether in research, communication, collaboration or leadership.

It will form the foundation of our curriculum, whose modules will be aligned with these key competencies. It will also serve as a reference to design learning activities adapted to different contexts, needs and levels of experience. In this way, it will contribute to strengthening a collective capacity to conduct inclusive and meaningful research.

UNDERSTANDING PATIENT-ORIENTED RESEARCH

Patient-oriented research (POR) is based on the idea that people with lived experience of a health condition hold valuable knowledge to guide research. By integrating the experiences of patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and decision-makers from the earliest stages of a project, POR leads to results that are more grounded in reality, more equitable and more likely to transform practices and services.

A SHARED LANGUAGE FOR COLLABORATION

Regardless of one’s role — patient partner, researcher, healthcare professional or decision-maker — collaboration in POR relies on a shared understanding of key foundations: research context, methods, ethical principles, inclusive communication, partner engagement and knowledge translation. These reference points help establish a common language, facilitate collaboration and support informed decision-making within teams.

A CURRICULUM DESIGNED TO ADAPT TO EVERYONE

Our curriculum, currently under development, brings together the essential competencies in POR through distinct and self-contained modules. Each person will be able to explore the content in the order that best suits their needs and pace. Once available online, this curriculum will support flexible and adapted learning to better foster the development of individual and collective skills.
